Atham procession at Tripunithura took almost two hours to finish. It was a hot day and I wanted to rest for a while. As I walked I came across this beautiful church. This is not the first time I am seeing this church.I have driven in front of this church several times when I was working and traveling from Kochi to Kottayam. But at that time I had no time or patience to stop and see.I was busy with my work, running around to achieve my business targets, training sales executives in the field and there were problems to be solved. I was always in a rush and had no time to spare for such fine things in life.In fact I thought the whole world was spinning on my shoulders.
I saw a vacant chair in the shade of the church. I went in,sat on the chair and looked around. It was a cute little church. The more I looked around the more I appreciated the finer aspects of this church. I understand that the local king in those days gave the land, money and craftsmen to build this church according to local taste, culture and tradition. The result is this lovely church. The modern churches are grand, imposing, spacious and a large amount of money is being spent to build them. But they are not beautiful in the real sense of the word.
The name of this church is ST.MARY’S SYRIAN JACOBITE CHURCH.
Here are some photos for your viewing pleasure.

ReplyDeleteMy God , this is such a beautiful church. I really liked the tiles. And the interior is so good. Good to know that finally you could do justice to this church. Splendid!
ReplyDeleteI like the architecture of the church and sensed the peace you felt when you went inside. There is something so calming about the inside of a church.
ReplyDeleteit is a very beautiful church....
ReplyDeletecurious...who are the head stones for? are they significant?
Hi Joseph,
ReplyDeleteLovely photos. The Orthodox churches in Kerala are so similar to Hindu temples. This is what struck me when I visited one last year on my holiday. If it weren't for the crosses and the pictures of Jesus, it felt more like a temple than a church! The huge oil lamp in the middle of the church as well as the architecture all comes from the Hindu tradition.
Considering the majority of Christians in Kerala were formerly Hindus, this is not surprising. Many of them, particularly the Orthodox Christians, have maintained some of their old Hindu customs and traditions.
There really are some grand churches in Kerala.
Best wishes,
JI.

Even I like the old churches as they give a certain feel of comfort. Same is the case with old temples. But I am not sure if it's correct to say the modern ones are not beautiful. Isn't it all in our mind? :)
