ST.GEORGE'S CHURCH,EDAPALLY
St George Forane Church, popularly known as EDAPALLY church, is situated in Edappally, which is about 10 km from Cochin. This Roman Catholic Church is one of the oldest churches in Kerala built in the year 593 AD. In 1080, a new church was built adjacent to the old church. Every year, a grand nine-day festival is celebrated here in the month of April - May. The church is also quite popular amongst the non-Christians, who also come here for veneration.

ReplyDeleteThe new church is beautifully designed. Our modern churches are most uninteresting when viewed from outside and not much better inside. I much prefer the old style architecture and the terrific atmosphere therein.

ReplyDeleteGreat looking churches however I have to wonder at all that money being spent to build New churches when so many are living in poverty, are homeless and jobless. How about building affordable housing, job/trade training for those that are less skilled and access to quality education for those that can't afford it.
Sure there is nothing wrong with building a house of worship but how many churches are needed? How leveling the playing field and investing in building the community and its surrounding areas giving those less fortunate a hand up (not a hand out) igniting hope and rejuvenating their spirits after all it is all about balance i.e. accessibility to healthcare, housing, and education those of which are just as important; so many rebuilds while so many are suffering is incomprehensible to me.

ReplyDeleteI can understand your feelings.Many times I have felt the same. But if you look at the colossal charitable work the church is doing in various fields such as education,helping the poor and sick,helping the flood affected etc. you will be surprised at the gigantic work that is being done all over the world.
Besides there are innumerable sister organisations such as Missionaries of Charity,Vincent de Paul Society etc. are doing fantastic work to ameliorate the conditions of the poor and suffering people.
All the problems you have mentioned are the primary concern of the government and it is a pity that the government is doing pretty little in this regard.

I didn't know the old church dated back to 593 AD! Thanks for the info. I've been a couple of times to the Church during the Festival.
