ON VISITING A GRAVEYARD

When we enter a graveyard the abounding peace, all pervading calmness and the unusual quietness strikes us forcibly. There is no commotion, struggle, dissension, discord, enmity, ego clashes, domination, anger, competition etc. The entire place is an oasis of silence except perhaps for the chirping of some birds or the distant roar of vehicles.

Another striking feature is that some graves are well maintained and others are not. Perhaps this may be due to the fact that some relations care for their departed ones more than others.

Some of us would like to think that death is only for other people and not for us. We want to believe that we will live for ever. Some of us are overcome with remorse, regret and guilty feeling at the thought that when the person was alive we did not appreciate them enough or do enough for them and now it is too late.

Here are some photos to remind us of the fact that WE ARE DUST AND TO DUST WE SHALL RETURN. WE CAME WITH NOTHING AND WE WILL GO WITH NOTHING. THIS WORLDLY LIFE IS TEMPORARY. WE HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF OUR SOUL WHICH IS INDESTRUCTIBLE AND HAS AN ETERNAL LIFFE.

  3. A wonderful post Joseph, beautiful words I can relate to and the pictures are again awesome.
It's strange that when you visit a graveyard
the quietness hits you yet outside is so busy and noisy.
    Have a good week-end.
    Yvonne.

  5. hmmmmmmmmmmmm......interesting entry. Quite colorful as far as graveyard go. It goes without saying that a graveyard would be peacefully quiet because it is as it should be, I mean is not like they get up and dance and ring bells.

    Have a grand weekend.
Namaste my friend, blessings to your family

  6. When I saw the header picture I thought I was looking at rows of beds. Sadly, my mistake. It is the same here, some families care for the graves of loved ones, others never visit. I often wonder why, maybe they left the area, maybe they're ill, maybe ... but who knows. Happy New Year, Joseph.

  8. Very sombre and wise thoughts accompany your photos Mr Joseph.

Very true indeed. Visiting a graveyeard stirs up a myriad of feeling, memories , of loved ones, sorrow at their parting, serenity, peace, thinking about the brevity of life, thoughts of facing death ourselves and most of all knowing we are mere mortals.

This is a very well kept cemetary- ours is not so good.

  12. These grave sites are a lot different than they are here. They are more colorful and well kept. Our grave sites are just stone markers, some have figures on and some are quite large. Thank you for this very nice post. Have a nice week.

  14. These are very different from over here in the US. The GY are always kept, and visited most often with flowers, statues and family. I thank you for sharing. Your photos always hold interest for me , and its a way for me to experience your country from my home. Happy new year friend.

  15. Joe, so early in the year and you are reminding us about death already. Anyway, as you rightly said it, death and the taxes are the 2 surest things in life !!! "Let's so live that even when we die the undertaker will be sorry" Mark Twain.

  17. Hi Joseph, your post, a mixed bag of emotion. In our youth we feel immortal, as if nothing can harm us. But as we begin to experience life it is evident that our present place in time is temporary. A few steps on our path of life, with birth our doorway in and death our doorway out. Hence LIFE IS ETERNAL, not this material plane and physical body.

  19. "Some of us would like to think that death is only for other people and not for us."...profound words there. Death is the inevitablity we all like not to think about.

  21. :) It seems that only in the end of life is there peace from it. Most of my friends hink graveyards are creepy but I think they're wonderful. I could sit in between two graves and be totally at ease knowing that the souls next to me have gone on to a better place and hvaing nothing left to worry about. My greatest wish is to see everyone I care about enter that sacred realm when their time comes. Eternal peace. What a thought provoking post :)

    God bless,
    Linnea

    (Beautiful pictures, Joseph!)
