Our countries have developed by leaps and bounds. We can see lovely, stylish cars on the roads, high rise, posh buildings every where, fashionable, trendy shops and malls, supermarkets and hypermarkets at convenient places, people dressed in expensive, branded clothes, wonderful food joints with unimaginable delicacies, latest electronic gadgets at home, people busily speaking on mobile phones every where and so on. There seems to be no dearth of money with the public at large.
But take a look at the people in the following photos. Progress and prosperity has not touched their lives. They are struggling to make a livelihood and desperately trying to keep their body and souls together. What is the use of all the development and progress if millions of people like this still have to live in perpetual penury and poverty? Many die of wars, heart disease, terrorism, leaks from nuclear plants, starvation, malnutrition, air, water and noise pollution. I am sure there is some answer to all these man made calamities.
thank you for sharing their stories...the people often forgotten in progress...the machine moves forward and they are left...there are many like that right now...here in the US the unemplyment is around 20% actually...their 12-13% they advertise excludes those working part time...our populus, while rich in comparison to many is at the highest poverty rate since the depression...
ReplyDeleteThanks for enlightening us of the situation, it's sad that the people who REALLY need help sometimes or never gets it.
ReplyDeleteThe photo's speak for themselves Joseph.
Hope you are well/better.
Yvonne.
So true...The Photos speak volumes...
ReplyDeleteHmm...I'm just speechless... the photos are so depressing.. shows how much the leaders care :(
ReplyDeleteThe glossy magazines, Internet, TV and ads tell only one side ofr the story. India has progreessed but the its march has not been uniform. The impovershed have got worse.
ReplyDeletedid you hear Rahul Gandhi 's beggar migration speech?
The rich are building their private mega cities to cocoon themselves

I feel the same way, Joseph. There is such a disparity between the "haves" and the
ReplyDelete"have-nots" in this world. I can't understand how those with such prosperity can sleep at night... but I honestly think they don't care, just as long as they have their comforts.
I did hear that there will be a huge population growth in India. I imagine it must be hard to keep up with taking care of so many people with limited resources.
ReplyDeleteI feel like subscribing to the views of Ginnie. Incidentally an unskilled laborer costs any where between 350 to 400 in Kerala. Plucking coconuts is becoming counter productive. Notwithstanding the pictures I believe Kerala does not have the kind of problems other states have. Two of your subjects are Biharis.
ReplyDeleteThank you sir, for bring up the subject, indeed our progress has been partial and there are lot more to be done.
ReplyDeleteAmrita said it right, when she observed "..the rich are building cities to cocoon themselves" and Subramanian has also a point, Kerala could be marginally better off.
There's no doubt sir, India needs strong at this crucial juncture, not just one charismatic leader, but many...
As ppl say there exist 2 India..
ReplyDeleteu clearly depicted the 2 !!
interesting post...
ReplyDeletei think you got relief from illness...
thanks

ReplyDeleteI am thrilled to know you are in town. My mobile no. is 9847195872. I will be thrilled to hear from you.

Hello Joseph, what you are sharing is so true. It seems to be a world wide epidemic. The gap between the rich and the poor grows wider with no bridge in sight.
ReplyDeleteAll of us our on a planet that has fallen and not as it should be. However, as we realize that the reason for the evil in the world is partly us, than we must go into the world and pray for all those that are ill; including not excluding the rich. The rich are not well if their minds are plagued by haunting guilt.
ReplyDeleteI think there are two types of people in any country, some have much money and the other half struggle to survive. I would like to be in the second half, they are more friendly and will help you out.
ReplyDeleteHi Joseph! Sorry for the absence, but there was a small accident around here...
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, it seems there is some improvement; we are getting worse in this part of Europe...
Blogtrotter Two is spending a day at sea. Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend!
I've observed this a lot too. Many economists talk about this 'Trickle-down' effect which never happens. The ones with more money buy international clothing brands and that money never trickles down to the handloom weaver!!! I'll be like 'its ok if you dont buy handloom atleast buy some Indian brand!!!'....

"No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable." Adam Smith, "The Wealth Of nations."
ReplyDeleteThe disparity is too big and dividing!
There is no easy solution to this issue. It needs mammoth political, social and economic reforms.
